Derwent Dilemma

Essentially 5 similar takes on the same shot from my recent Keswick trip.

I had numerous very similar shots taken from this point. These are the 5 I have remaining and I am unable to decide which one I prefer.

I would be really interested to get your views - do you prefer one over the others and if so why?

Thanks
Carl.

Version 4 by a country mile for me Carl.

The composition on the whole with the mountains, the greater width etc just works for me so much better.

The others are not bad shots by any stretch either

Carl, I agree, 4 is the one - the only one really I think .. the others just don't work because the massive jetty cuts off the whole right side - it seems frustrating, you just want to climb up over it and see something!

4 is a lovely composition - I maybe wish for a higher viewpoint, I'm not sure about those posts cutting above the horizon onto the sky ??

And what is going on with that sky? There's a massive dark patch just off centre in the top third - looks like uneven grad filter work?

Interesting - the jetty was meant to be the shot really - but you both want to see the mountains - maybe I should have cropped to the end of the jetty

Ok lesson learned - no jetty shots - unless there are lots of mountains in the background.

Nigel - I was using a new Kenko pro CPL under the grads - and I think that is what caused the dark patch of sky - had this happen in a few shots.

Looking at them together here - I agree on 4 but also like 5 - as a shot of the Jetty

I guess the low jetty side viewpoints work best in those shots like Alan's, (Blythman), you know with the groynes stretching off into nothingness .... thats the key I think - its ok when there's a uniform seascape behind it, the brain fills in the gaps - with yours here there's so much fantastic interest and detail in the background that it seems criminal to deprive the viewer of any of it!

Number 4 is the clear winner, none of the others come close. The reason is that the perspective is better and the image is so much more balanced compositionally. Why? Because you can see the top of the jetty and the details beyond it into the distance, including the mountains. You've already mentioned it above, but I think the polarising effect is a bit too strong, maybe the polariser without the grad or the grad without the polariser may have worked?

I also vote for No.4 you get some context of its location better.

Yes I was going to say 4 too because it puts the whole picture in a much larger context and gives extra interest. Except for the first one where you can also see the hills, the others kinda box you in in comparison.

I do like them all though - the polariser is very strong in the sky isn't it? But it also adds (again) some interest by allowing you to see into the water.

Very nice.

Version 4 for me too, looks to have more deliberate framing and just generally works better as a photo. Cracking Shot!

Version 4, but I'm also not keen on the posts cutting the sky line.
