Decisions, Decisions

Had a few quid burning a hole in my pocket that I decided to spend today.

Choices were between:
Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Pentax 18-135
Pentax Q

Decision made. Pentax 18-135 should be here on Tuesday. I was at Appleby last week and took the 16-45 and the 50-135. For when it rained I took the 18-55 WR too. The constant changing of lenses on the day is what has swayed me to go for the 18-135.

Fingers crossed it is as good as the recommendations from people on here, as opposed to reviews.

Still want an f2.8 wide zoom as an upgrade to the 16-45, but that will have to wait.

Pentax Q - think I just fancied the novelty. And perhaps buying some 110 lenses and an adapter. I have also seen pics of it being used with a DA300mm and a K adapter for wildlife.

I have not been disappointed with my 18-135 and I'm sure you won't be.

Perfect for rough weather without changing lenses, it's the go anywhere lens. I found I was still carrying the 50-200 in my rucksack on mountain trips, for the extra reach, but never getting it out as the range of the new lens was never really lacking! I tend to leave it behind now.

I seem to have the 18-135mm on my camera most of the time. Think some of my better photos have been taken with this and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Or you could try these two.

You really needn't.

If any SLR mount was so weedy as to need picking up by the camera as well as the lens, they would fall off in their hordes as soon as people mounted a big lens by using its tripod mount.

In fact, picking them up by the camera is more risky with a big lens.

I've picked cameras up mostly by the lens for 30 years, never had it fall off yet.

The third lens is just a bog standard walk about everyday super dooper and probably doesn't even have a tripod mount or fit the Q so I didn't include it

I always use the rule of thumb of "pick up whichever's heavier". Same goes for mounting. If the lens weighs more, hold that and turn the camera.

Of course the really important one is never transport very big lenses on your camera - seen too many stories of lens mounts coming off. Although I've never heard of the lenses being damaged.

(PS, the guy in the photo above is a wimp).

Not sure I'd agree with 'never', unless you don't count the Bigma as 'very big'.

I use this Think Tank bag to cart the K-5 around with the Bigma on it when I go to airfields, and it's pretty well protected, I think.

That's good to know. I picked up someone's Canon 1Ds III by the (kit) lens the other weekend, and instantly felt I had infringed camera etiquette!

I was really referring more to transporting in a vehicle. Even in camera bags they can come a cropper.
