I would second the manual focus suggestion, but try looking for the A version of the 28mm lens instead of the M version. It makes metering much simpler!
That's what I did, and I found one on eBay. Was also looking for a general-purpose prime, in my case to replace the 18-55mm zoom that came with my K100D Super. Pleased so far.

The old A series primes are well worth the money. I have a 50mm f1.7 which I really enjoy using, despite it being a slightly odd focal length with the crop factor.

I am surprised nobody mentioned the K35/3.5, or if you cant find it any of the screw mount takumar versions.

Image quality is staggering, and price is low.
I second this, however I think the (super) takumar and the K are a little different (I own both). Another option for manual focus is the K28/3.5 (and the takumar 28/3.5 as well).

I agree with those who suggest the DA35 Limited as an excellent lens that would be almost impossible to beat on IQ. However I also agree with those who prefer the 28mm focal length on APS-C. My favourite 28mm lenses are some of the Vivitar branded f/2 speed manual focus variants.

I'm not sure about the price being low. Takumars seem to be hitting mad prices at the moment, presumably as adapters exist to put an M42 screw mount lens on pretty much every DSLR.

Thanks to everyone who has posted. Given me plenty of food for thought, what with the recommendations of 28mm lenses as well as 35mm. I had originally specified a 35mm lens, but the 28mm option might be a little more flexible.

That said, the FA 35mm Limited really looks a stunner, and my budget might just stretch thanks to my student loan finally being repaid this month (only took 8 and a half years!).
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

Apparently.

An autofocus Pentax 28mm here,

ffords

as well as some other exotica, not the cheapest place though.

I fancy the FA 20mm, but not for £399

Cheers for that, not seen that particular website before, but seems to be some interesting stuff there.

I may well take the plunge on that 28mm lens.

Your welcome, 'robbie_d', just after I posted the info, I started thinking about the FA28mm myself ?

I'll let you have first go !!!

If it is still there in a week, you might have to fight me for it ?

edit, just a thought,

some of these FA lenses may be a good investment for anyone waiting for the "Pentax FF, DSLR" ?
