I am surprised nobody mentioned the K35/3.5, or if you cant find it any of the screw mount takumar versions. Not looking to break the bank, but will pay for quality.
Image quality is staggering, and price is low.
(bokeh could be better, if this is an issue the K35/2 is better, however few 35mm lenses have great bokeh.)

A SMC Takumar 35mm f/2 went for £67 on evilbay this evening. Considerably more than my max bid! This K series version of this lens isn't very common.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

35mm lenses in general don't seem hugely common. Mind you, there might be a post-xmas flurry as people look to dispose of old gear that's been replaced by new presents...
I have a K 55mm f1.8 that I paid £8 for on impulse, I now have no intention of letting it go (a little dust, otherwise somewhere between very good and excellent)! The K series lenses are superb, and I keep a constant eye open for more. They are slightly larger than the M series but they match the DSLRs well as a result.

I just have three K series lenses and they are all excellent. I have my eye out for one or two more...

With respect to you guys suggesting a 28 that's what 42 in film speak. I find the difference between my 30 and 35 to be quite noticeable so that if he really wants the 50mm look than I think a 35 (= 52) is called for.

That's right, but we're suggesting that Robbie thinks again whether he might in practice enjoy a wider angle more. It's just an alternative suggestion. 50mm was considered "standard" on film from habit and tradition. Some argue that around 43mm made a better standard lens on film. With respect to you guys suggesting a 28 that's what 42 in film speak. 28mm lenses can be cheaper as well.

I would argue that 35 was a better standard which means he could be looking for a 24? But his brief was the 50mm look. My hat's in the ring - for £235 you will not do better than the Pentax/Samsung 35/f2!
If he's local to me I would happily let him try it.

Cheapest of all for new condition lens is the MIR 1B 37mm F2.8 (M42 screw mount). Lots available on Ebay. Impressive lens I think.

Do what I do...
Buy an FA28, then FA35, thinking that I would not need the FA31 Ltd....
that was an itch that had to be scratched....

I would second the manual focus suggestion, but try looking for the A version of the 28mm lens instead of the M version. It makes metering much simpler!
