Interesting. I usually use a black background for mounting prints and also for ePHOTOzine, but here on the forum I just accepted what was here and didn't really find a problem.
Not sure about this one, what do others think?

depends on what you mean by 'dark skin'. if you want the main bacground colour to be dark, then I definitely don't want it. I use the 'sub blue' skin, the red is too dark for me.
I have problems reading text against a dark background, white text on black/dark is the worst and gives me headaches. There are several photo sites i don't use anymore because of this sort of colour scheme.
For pictures on my own site I have a dark blue background and that works well, so for photo galleries dark is ok. For text based sections white or neutral is better.

I have no problem with either sub-red or sub-silver as a skin. They are both restful to look at and easy to read. If you change the background for a darker colour the text becomes harder to read. It is possible to change the outer frame from light to dark - on my forum http://www.garafiano.nl/forum/ we have that, but it doesn't affect viewing text or photographs.

Just alter the subred.css file and have whatever colour you want.

This is what I am generally used to:

Switching from one to the other hurts my eyes
You'd have the option of using a dark skin, not be forced to use it. So at least some people would like it to be available but they're not adding comments.
