This is like the way in which our government (civil servants, probably) will insist in tampering with EU legislation.I'm pretty sure this isn't, for once, of the Banks' doing, but part of the raft of pointless legislation introduced by the last government. Remember the fuss about ID cards - no, we don't want any of those foreign things here, thanks - so when you need some photo ID, only a passport will suffice. We have to show passports in EU when everyone else gets by with an ID card. Does help to keep the passport service in work, though .
Go to the US and every hotel will politely ask for "some ID, please", and they mean something with your picture on it.
For decades it was possible to travel between UK and Ireland without a passport. Now you need photo ID. Most airlines will accept a driving licence with a photo - which is the government line - except Ryanair who demand a passport (and neither government will sort that one out wonder why).

I had the same thing recently when I verified my bank account with Paypal, previously I had just registered my card and it was instantaneous.
The annoying thing is that my account HAS been verified and all went well last time I transfered moneys (more or less over night).Pentaxophile wrote:

So I've no idea what they're playing at this time around

It's when the toll machine in France eats your card that you worry!
Fortunately it was on the way home and my replacement AMEX blue card arrived the same day we got home, total from reporting eaten to receiving new card was 2 days!
I find it insulting that some banks (Santander amongst them) want to see a passport or similar when closing an account with them and transferring the money to another bank account in the same name!!
Off course we have to remember we're all drug dealing gun running money launderers!
