I also thought your post was usefull Chris, I think your summary at the end that;
Quote:
I'm starting to think the 18-135 is going to be quite usable
Is probably correct, the current list price is, as others have said way to high, once it drops to a more reasionable level I think many will find it a good walkabout.
Mine arrives today, hope to do some testing over the weekend.
Keep reviewing Chris, is it usefull.

It is a nice lens, ignore the measurebators.
I have to say, my recent thread on my experiences with the 18-135 will be my last such, given the lack of interest, and suggestions like this.

When helpful information such as "nice lens" is preferred to a fairly time-consuming exercise in photographing, cropping, uploading and commenting, in order to give hopefully at least a reasonably objective view, and all the while taking great pains to try and find a balance between ultimate pixel-peeping and real-world examples, the incentive to repeat the exercise does dwindle a little.
I found your set of photos illustrating the strengths and weaknesses of the DA18-135 very useful. link

I think Tyr's point was that the lens has had some rather damning reviews due to measurable deficiencis such as vignetting and softness at the borders etc., but that in normal day to day useage it is a very nice lens in size, weight and rapid, silent focus which are less easily scored attributes.
I didn't mean anything negative about the lens. It has received some bad reviews which really bashed it for it's weaknesses.

Vignette is easy to control and correct with little IQ loss in lightroom and other software. Corner softness has not been an issue so far and I really hadn't noticed it. Centre resolution is very high even at the long end.

I didn't think it was overpriced considering everything it brings. The DA16-45 was more than that in its day.

Not about the lens, no, that is very clear.

The thing is, the term 'measurebate' has, in these parts, a very specific meaning that is extremely pejorative, and can be construed as insulting if used of any normal person.

For those that perhaps haven't come across it, it was coined first, I believe, and certainly used in all seriousness, by someone that, I suspect, never realised the ironic and spectacularly accurate use of English he happened upon.

The individual concerned writes a blog that is notorious for its staggering negativity about all things Pentax, for its selective and inaccurate reporting of test results, and for its consistency in failing always to see the wood for the trees.

The term 'measurebate' is an obvious contraction of the word 'measure', and another, and implies a slightly unnatural tendency to measure, pixel-peep if you will, to an extent that loses any notion of real-world photography and seems to afford the perpetrator considerable pleasure.

Used by its original (I believe) coiner, it's quite funny, since the blog in question is exactly as the word suggests, and is often so ridiculous as to be almost other-worldly.

In other contexts, it's like calling someone a ****er.

Which many people, myself included, think the blog author is.

WOW, well... I wasn't calling anyone that, or saying you were in any way. You took some real world example images and use them to demonstrate the lenses properties.

I was just saying people shouldn't take the measurement reviews so seriously when considering a lens. Nothing quite like using it and seeing if it suits you and looking at other people's output from it and see if it is pleasing.

I apologise if you believed at any points that my comments were aimed at you. They were not and I never meant to offend you or anyone else and I was certainly not attacking you or your comments made in this or the other threads about the 18-135.

I feel really bad that you took my comments in that way.

Chris, I am totally sure the comment wasn't aimed at you in a snide way. I frequently test my new lenses, and read the reviews etc. There is definitely value in doing so. I don't mind the term Tyr used though, its just a humorous way of admitting it can all get too obsessive sometimes. When I measurebate I do feel a pang of guilt, but it's important to remember it's natural, harmless, and virtually everyone does it.

No worries, apologies for overreacting.

I continue to read threads on the 18-135 as it's an excellent focal range and the WR is an attraction - for my intended use corner softness etc as mentioned in the reviews could be an issue though as I do print up to 36x24 inch and have concerns how the prints may appear. Has anyone printed large photographs as yet with the 18-135 and could add some comments?

I'll have to give it a go at some point and report back.

I am interested in how the lens compares with the Tamron 18 - 250.

Any thoughts?
