DA*16-85 still on roadmap

I will look into selling my DA*16-50 (which incidently hasn't skipped a beat) to help pay for it.
I've got an annoying gap in my focal lengths between 50 and 70, this will fill that perfectly.

I have that range well coverd already with fast 2.8 zooms, I dislike variable aperture zooms.

Well I only won €10 tonight, so I shan't be splurging it on a new lens .

Also on the roadmap is a new super-wideangle, something around 12-28mm, and today Tokina have announced a, you guessed it, 12-28mm. What's the betting this crops up in Pentax clothing?

Having just bought an ex-demo 12-24 (which I haven't used yet, but by all reports is excellent) I would only be interested in the 12-28 DA* if there was noticeable IQ difference or, more importantly for me, weather sealing.

What you neeed, then, is an F 35-70, and you WON'T need a mortgage to get one ! This old lens has had many good reports here and elswhere, so good hunting !

I hope not, I can't see the point of a Tokina clone. A DA*12-28 (or 24) with weather sealing I would consider. If it were ff compatible then it would be at the top of my shopping list.

It's an expansion of the 12-24mm to 28mm, still f/4 and intended for APS-C sensors. It would fit well as a replacement for the 12-24mm, if that's what is intended.

The point is co-operation between manufacturers helping to control costs and to maximise the use of production facilities, I would imagine. And an extension of the range for the photographer.

It will be interesting to see if a Pentax version appears and indeed if it performs as well as the excellent 12-24mm.

A 12-28mm would fit in well with a SMC F 28-80mm 3.5-4.5
giving good coverage from 12-80mm with 2 lenses and
reasonable semi-macro at 80mm, beating off most primes
along the way

Edit:
On 2nd thoughts we already have the 12-24mm plus
24-90mm which covers the same range and has close
focusing on the 24-90mm so maybe we don't need
the 12-28mm after all.

If the 'upgrade' is (also?) a Tokina clone and it is that good then it is available to other systems' users too, in a cheaper version. I think Pentax needs unique lenses to be a player and to develop more of them.

I agree. A 8, 10 or 12mm WR rectilinear prime for example. I've never understood why no prime below the 15mm DA (or discontinued 14mm?) The road mapped 12 - 28 (replacement for the 12 - 24?) would be nice if constant aperture.
