Totally stopped?
Try manually focussing and turning it on/off several times and doing a manual focus to assist it when it should auto focus.

Johnsons aside , you could try Asahi Photo or Harrow Technical. Alan Marlow is very good, but I don't think he services DA* lenses.
Before you send it off, try turning the screw drive, ideally by focusing on an old AF film body, if not turn the mechanism backwards and forwards with a small flat screwdriver. Then try again on your DSLR making sure that your battery is fully charged first.

I usually use Alan but he was a bit reluctant to do my 50-135mm so I sent it to Johnsons. If I remember correctly the quote was approx £180 to fix the lens (new SDM motor) but if you join PU plus (£10) you get a 20% discount, so worth doing.
On the plus side I always found the 50-135mm very slow to focus but it's like a different lens with the new motor.

Harrow mainly do 35mm stuff. I'm afraid Johnson's is about it. I hope you don't need the lens for anything soon...

I've had the same SDM trouble with my DA*50-135mm lens Neil. TWICE. Both times it went to Johnsons who are based in Newcastle; that's the Stoke on Trent one not the one up the road from me.
Both times Johnsons have repaired it quickly and efficiently. Staff there are very helpful.
The last time, this last autumn, it was away about two weeks and the £180 price quoted was reduced because I'm a Plus member of PUF. The return postage was also free.
Bottom line is you'll have it back working as good as new well before the next Goths Festival in Whitby.

My da* 50-135 as this morning decided not to auto focus so it will have to go for repair
Can anybody recommend someone ,I know of johnsons but is there anybody else
