From Wigton the nearest lakes would be Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water about 30 miles away. Another 10 miles and you have Rydal Water and Grassmere. Loads to be going on with. I would avoid Bowness, Windermere, and Ambleside they are all shopping for outdoor clothing. The old ticker stopped me climbing the hills but I'm told it's great on the toips as well.

hello Emma,

Don't restict yourself to looking at the lakes. The west coast of cumbria offers some excellent opportunies for photos. Good for sunsets, seals, birds etc.

There some excellent old industrial sites and Victorian seaside towns. The churches are old and some have celtic and Viking crosses etc.

A good walking book is 'West lakeland', pub. by Cicerone press. Buy direct from the publisher with free postage. For linear walks use the train, it is quite frequent.

Enjoy yourself its a great area I actually think that the research is an exciting part of any holiday.

At Wigton a few years ago they killed some dissenting females by tying them to posts when the tide was out, and then waited for it to come in.

So be careful.
