In the interests of good photography isn't it better to vote on what you think is the best image rather than vote simply because of what brand camera was used to take the shot?

Spot on.

I thought the winning image was a bit 'meh' to be honest, a few of the others were far better IMHO.

I think we need to remember that the judging was done by 'Joe Public' and not enthusiasts or experienced judges. So this was a popularity contest rather than a photographic one. For me it does not matter and I don't judge the winner, in fact I'd be very very happy to have captured that picture half as well.
