You will find published books that say they have tried their best to find the copyright owners of all the images they have used and if they have missed any they are very sorry and please let them know.
In the context of your project, for personal use only, whatever the legalities strictly are then I doubt there would be any problems.

I bump into this from time to time with photo restorations...
If it is not being used for any commercial/public display, and I can't see a copyright notice, or if I cannot locate the business (ie out of business) then I trust the person asking me to do the restoration when they tell me that THEY hold the copyrights. If they produce a note with concent, I'm not a forensics/handwriting expert, I just keep a copy of it.
But that is usually old family/wedding photos, and your efforts may get a yes or no from various places so try your luck.

My wife has a litho print of a painting by Gloria Eriksen. The print was produced by Bernard Picture Company in 1982 and has a very small copyright symbol (circled C) followed by BP Co. in the bottom left corner.
The print is very badly faded so I've re-photographed it and worked on the colours to produce a reasonable result that I think would print well on Canvas.
I've spent a long time trawling 't internet and have not been able to find any web sites for the printing company, neither have I found the print available to purchase from any of the poster galleries.
Now to my question. Can I rightfully send my image of this print to somebody like Photobox and have it printed without any possible repercussions as it seems that the apparent copyright owner, Bernard Printing Company, no longer exists?
The print itself has little value and was probably bought from M&S, it just happens to be one of my wife's favourite prints and I'd like it reproduced.
