Can anyone kindly advise me where I might obtain reliable and proven instructions regarding the conversion of SDM lenses to screw drive? I understand that the K3 cannot be used for this purpose although of course screw drive lenses work as normal on the K3.

Do a search on Pentaxforums, plenty of info on there about it.
No equipment list here but thanks for taking an interest. My Flickr

Just converted my 50-135 to screw drive.. Much better - well worth it. One down two to go!

Is the conversion reversible? i.e. put it back to SDM?

Yes I believe so - the camera saves a file automatically on your SD card during the process called BACKUP.LNS or LENSEEP.LNS and it is recommended you keep copies of these files on your computer, before deleting them, in case you do wish to go back to SDM.

Now completed sdm to screwdrive da*16-50, da*50-135 and da*300mm lenses. All focus faster and, in at least one case, more accurately. Because these
lenses are so solidly built, the mechanical noise is well dampened and is, for example, well below that of the F zooms.

Well done Roger; an excellent outcome and plenty of years of use ahead!
