It's (comparatively) easy to correct for distortions in-camera when the lens is fixed - ie. a known quantity. I think you'd have a lot harder time adapting the same technology to a DSLR as you'd have to include seperate corrections for any/all lenses that could possibly be mounted - on Pentax cameras that's a *lot* of potential lenses! Silkypix also has digital shift and distorton correction functions.
The shifting does crop the image, though, of course, so allow for this when possible when taking the shot in the first place.

Click on the calibration tag on the Contents menu, where there is info on how to get a lens profiled by Tom Niemann (author of PTLens).

It could be done by the firmware if it contained a database of lens info. It's not technologically difficult and could be done in a couple of weeks by a team of programmers. It's just a question of whether Pentax users would want such a feature. There are side effects to any corrections, for a start.

The only Pentax lens listed as not requiring corrections is the 77mm Limited.
