I hope you don't mind but... I wanted to try a technique for turning a single JPG into an HDR image, so I downloaded your original "dark image" and used Silkypix to create versions with +1 +2 and +3 ev, then used Photomatix Pro to create a pseudo-hdr image

I don't mind you working on this image, I posted up asking for critique, this is a good way to explain things.

Your version is definitely lighter than mine in the foreground. it doesn't look hdr, but I think it's a bit less 3 dimensional.

The pseudo-hdr technique boosts up the dark areas without losing fine detail in the branches, and also meant that I didn't have to muck around with masks to process different areas differently.
