Computer seems to be working fine , bought the 1tb external hard drive from c----s last night , (a western digital 1tb £54.99) uploaded all my pictures on to it last night , its probably not the fastest out there but it works well.

Are you going to keep one set or two? If just one on the external drive, you still have no real back up.

I sometimes wonder if it's not easier to buy some cloud space?

Well I've been web based on my email for years. Got sick of outlook express, eudora, thunderbird etc and just sacked them.I sometimes wonder if it's not easier to buy some cloud space?
Trouble is with clouds the upload speed/download speed. You have to pay for storage and than have to pay to upload and download it.

Well we are getting glass-fibre here quite soon so up and download speeds should be reasonable then.
I haven't looked into the pay plans but I thought you only paid for the space and not the traffic, guess I need to look what's available.

Clouds don't do the traffic. Most access packages (home and mobile) have "reasonable use" clauses so as soon as you start whacking GB's as you browse through your snaps to edit one you'll exceed the limit quickly.

I believe limited and true limited is the norm here at least the package we have is that, download around the 35GB per month and couldn't find limits or reasonable use with the fibre packages offered.
I think cloud is still a bit too expensive for massive use but you could for example back up your most precious photos safely and just have a single backup of your other photos.

Most think since it's digital it will last forever but the DVD you burn at home are chemically slightly unstable so they decay over time.
I believe 60 years is normal for good quality ones and some might make it up to 100 years when stored correctly.
Also use DVD+ instead of DVD-

Sorry if you have already found a solution but always worth having for connecting a drive to recover data.

I have two drives - 550 and 250 mb Medion drives from Aldi - or was it Lidl? Either way, cheap, and I have two backups of my images - Just in case!
