No not at all. Criticism is great and useful. I'm going to take some yellow out of the image

Completely disagree. Plenty enough DR in a K-5.

For once mine wasn't a technical comment - by 'striking' I meant with enough visual interest, like in the HDR version with its varying levels of light and shade. This is a uniformly lit scene, so no doubt a K-5 could cope!

Hi

Is it just a case of lowering the yellow in the image via light room? i don't use photo shop. Ta

You could just do that. Most people commenting here have rejected the HDR effect as unrealistic. My view is that the scene would be dull with just a basic processing, as there is not enough variation or interest in lighting and contrast across. So I would retain the HDR processing, but tone it down a bit.

If you can't do Photoshop layers work (as I suggested earlier, I think this blending technique would give the best quality), then you might re-run the shots through the HDR program (was it Photomatix - I asked about the 'Lighting effects' buttons before), but try and keep the changes you see to a minimum.

Yup, just try lowering yellow saturation. Also try they yellow hue slider and see if shifting it more green might help. or a combination.

I would start again with just one image in LR. try really boosting shadows really reducing highlights, before adjusting blacks and whites to suit. And obviously adding grad filters for sky and foreground as required.

Completely disagree. Plenty enough DR in a K-5.
Completely agree with this disagreement, and would also add that folk have been extracting striking images from single frames for donkeys years, and on cameras far less capable than a k5.

HDR to me suits certain images better than others, buildings, cars, church interiors etc. can look good sometimes, but trees, grass, etc. seldom look good to my eye anyway.

I also think that some feel for an image to be classed as "ok" or "good" or "great" or "fantastic" and so on, that it has to be technically perfect, this is such a shame to me as it seems some folk are so bogged down looking at the technical aspects of their images they forget to just look at the picture.

Just my thoughts on this sunny avo,
By the way I think it's a perfectly nice image and would love to see it as is.

Jim.

Thanks to all who took the time to critique my photo in a HELPFUL manner!

I concede that taking the yellow out a little definately makes the shot.

Thanks for all your help.

Heres my final "cut" as it where and Im more than happy now with it. Comment Image

I really can't see what is so contestable in my comment We are only talking about this very 1 shot, and considering the dull lighting, muted and uniform tones, I still think it is fair to say that 'it may be difficult.... from a single frame'.

Despite all the negative feedback about the HDR, the OP doesn't seem too interested in trying it 'as it is'? If anyone can produce a truly 'striking' image created from a single frame of this then I'll gladly retract!

And if we are asked to comment on something like this shot, its hard to imagine just what we might be talking about if its nothing technical about the processing - maybe you'd prefer it to just be things like 'not too keen on the boat'.

Well, then we could start talking about cloning techniques ....

Well done to questionablecarrot for trying out something new - I think he's made a good stab at it.
