Shaking with anticipation - I think

Well, I discovered something last night.
It's a lot harder to get controlled motion blur than it is to get the accidental motion blur I usually get

I am surprised at how fast a shutter speed I can use and still have motion blur.

Good job I have a little time left as none of the shots I took last night worked.

Are we looking at the last ever picture by Daniel Bridge?

Would be a nice way to go. Getting the shot of a lifetime I mean, not being hit by a steam train.

Puller, actually. So it's going backwards, and the carriage I was in had a handy 'balcony' bit at the end that you could stand on and get a face full of smoke.

Took loads of shots, this, I think, was the best of the bunch. But there were a few nice ones, pity the sky wasn't blue.

I don't want to be rude here, but most of these photographs show movement from a stationary position, and I think that the ones that are panned, and still in focus, are of a much higher level of technical ability (although we are probably not judging technical ability here..)

Heidi's shot is almost in perfect focus, and its very good IMO, and I am also very please about shot which was taken from a running carriage, trying to capture movement in the opposite direction. This is very hard and as much as the subject has movement blur, i was extremely pleased with this shot, and the fact that I managed to pan the background and almost get the subjects as well!

Stationary movement shots are surely more clean, and detailed, and this is admirable, but learning to move the camera during the exposure is so much fun!!!

I agree with you Nathan, however the suggestion of movement is in the brief.

I also like Heidi's shot.

For me Anvh's shot ticks all the technical boxes.

Panning is fun and does take some practise and results can be very interesting.

A technically fantastic picture does not necessarily mean an ascetically fantastic picture!

You are certainly right that panned shots require a higher level of technical ability. But as you rightly say "we are probably not judging technical ability here" (and I would strike out the probably).

Basically we have several options:
1. Movement of an object blurs photo taken with stationary camera
2. Movement of an object frozen with stationary camera
3. Movement of an object frozen by moving camera (a.k.a. panning)
4. Movement blurred by movement of object and camera
5. Still object blurred by moving camera
6. combinations of above and/or PP
7. the ones I forgot to mention

What option we choose depends on the movement we are trying to capture or the image we have in mind.
While the appreciation for the skill level required for a shot most likely will play some role in judging the entries I think the impression of the finished product on the viewer/judge is most important.

I am very conscious that my writing is offensive to some, and therefore I am thinking of a disclaimer I can add to the bottom of my posts, in the meantime, I am cautious...

BTW, completely agree with you, and mine was a simple consideration...

One thing I would add Nathan, seeing as mine was one you were being rude about ( Disclaimer time...No Offence Taken! ).

It is getting a suitable oppurtunity during the fortnight. Mine was a bit rushed, one evening as I arrived home from work as it was the only chance I was going to get. It would be great if I could have got to a race track, or to the park, or a steam railway, but time just doesn't allow for that.

Now, maybe I could have decided not to enter but, due to time restrictions, I found I've fallen out of the habit of entering, so something is better than nothing and it all helps me to learn.

Having said all of that, I've picked what I think is the winner and it is one which meets your criteria. So, maybe you are right after all.
Maybe there is not right or wrong...just opinions between friends
