I'd like to understand a bit more about colour.
Anybody care to recommend a decent book on colour please?

Any mini review would be good with a guess at the level.

I guess I'm looking for something covering A level through to 1st year degree kind of standard.

Cheers

Wow! This is no trivial question.
Colour from the viewpoint of an artist?
Colour from the viewpoint of perceptual psychologist?
Colour from a viewpoint between the two (psychology of emotion perhaps)?

The best simple explanation I have found is (Dont Laugh!):
Avotie, A., (1994) Gastronomic Colour Theory and Composition. Saarionen Oy, Tampere, Finland.
I have the English translation published by Gummerus Kirjapano Oy. It might be easier to search for under the ISBN number 951-96881-3-7.

Most psychological texts will deal with stuff like the rods and cones, wavelengths, etc; Avotie's book discusses stuff more relevant to photography like lightness and brightness and composition.

If Avotie is hard to find (may be out of print by now) you could try for:
Hornung, D., Colour: A Workshop for Artists and Designers pub by Laurence King as a paperback.

Thanks. The Hornung looks apposite.

From the viewpoint of an artist please.

I know this will probably be a lifetime's incomplete task but a start is needed.

£10 thanks yes, already looked, was just weighing up whether to buy 8GB 30Mb/s SDHC at the same time as I had speed issues on Monday, never thought I would.

I'll wait and see if there are any other suggestions and bulk order rather than annoy the poor postie.

I'll also get the Kodak, Mastering Colour. As the composition book is simple and good. Ebay for £3ish.

The Time Life book "Color" might start you off well enough. Although out of date the subject has not changed. It was part of the Time Life series on photography and a second hand copy should be easy enough to find.
Best regards, John
