Close-Up Flash

I've just got hold of a bargain AF280T flash from Ebay for my LX. Already posessing extension tubes/reversing rings, I wondered if anyone had any experience of using this flash for close-up work? Presumably, with the flash connected to the camera, but held close to the subject, the TTL IDM gubbins will do their stuff and give perfcect results? Or will they?

Your thoughts please...

Haven't used this flash for closeups but I have used a Sunpak 444 with TTL capability. I bounced the flash off of an umbrella type reflector made by Sunpak and got very good results. The TTL circuitry in the camera and flash takes care of the exposure. The main problem with using regular shoe mount flashes is that the light may miss the subject since the flash is pointed straight ahead and parallel to the lens. The extension tube may also block the light even if the flash may be tilted downward at the subject. One way to solve this problem is to use a bounce reflector as I did. Another way may be to use a flash bracket and a TTL compatible cable to move the flash off the camera's hot shoe so it can be aimed directly at the subject. Flash brackets and TTL cables may not be cheap solutions. Therefore a bounce reflector type setup that is velcroed to the flash head may be a cheaper solution.
