I haven't washed my K10D or lenses since getting them 2 years ago.
If the lens element is dirty I use my shirt bottom
Believe me, my kit has been in some 'orrible places, but just seems to self clean... except when shooting with fisheye, 4 inches from wet skateboard wheel, then the shirt got pretty sodden keeping the front element clear.
Grotty handgrips? try washing your hands

My excavation in Romania has the lightest, dustiest soil I have ever come across. It gets into everything. It is like talcolm powder. My K10D is fine. The kit lens has a slight nasty noise as you zoom... I just use a soft cloth on the body, with a little water if needed.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.
