CLA LX vs MX

Exactly! I have successfully changed the light seals on my beat-up Spotmatic, but I would not even think about a DIY service attempt on my MXs.

A proper CLA performed by a professional includes testing of exposure meter and shutter,
and adjustment as required. No amateur I know has the equipment or skills required.

Chris, for anything with a dual-curtain shutter it's pretty easy to adjust, and can be tested using a CRT monitor/TV

As for checking the meter, the easiest way as far as I can tell would be to use a DSLR to meter a plain surface and use that as a benchmark.

I used them to service my LX & MX both are like new now.

In a proper CLA the shutter is checked and adjusted at multiple speeds.
Exposure meter adjustment is performed using a calibrated light source.

Your homebrew CLA would confirm functionality at some level
but does not constitute a proper alignment to factory specs.

I'm currently selling my LX and associated gear because i'm going digital. In the years I have owned my LX, I have never had a moments trouble with it. Prior to this I owned another LX and an MX, neither camera have been any less than a joy to use.

The difficulty I now have is that I can't find a camera at a reasonable price which matches the build quality and sheer simplicity of the LX!! The nearest I have found is the Leica M series and that's probably where i'm heading to spend thousands of pounds on one camera body and a couple of lenses, because nothing else beats my LX and my now sold 50mm f1:1.2. The camera was CLA'd some years ago when my father owned it and I haven't used more than 50 rolls through it since I have owned it. As far as I am concerned, it is spot on but as the other guys here have said, having it CLA'd by Harrow would really set your mind at ease.

If you want a trouble free camera which was built properly, buy my LX, LX case and Pentax strap for £250. If you have any doubts about me, please take a look at the various items I have recently sold to other members of this forum and the feedback I have had from them. I wouldn't mind you asking them directly about how they found me to deal with.

I would prefer it if my LX went to a good home and to a member of this forum, which is why it's not on ebay or any other site. If you want to know more, please let me know and i'll email you some photos of it.

Consider that the price of buying just one or two other MX's is still 'cheaper' than getting yours CLA'd. A lot of these are 'dumped' at the market right now. I know of course that buying another one is still a risk, but for GBP 100 or 200 you can buy a lot of MX's.....

(my preference would be to do the CLA-job myself)
