Chinon lenses

I have a Chinon 50mm F1.7 and a Chinon 28mm F2, both pretty good lenses for what I paid for them (Nothing and £10.00 respectively) and I would just like to know if anyone else has experience of these lenses?
It's not about the equipment; it's the results you achieve with it.

The 55mm f/1.4 and f/1.2 are really excellent lenses with
really nice bokeh.

The 50mm's are OK in terms of sharpness but being newer
designs the bokeh isn't as good as the older stuff.

What's a Chonon 28mm F2 ? Is that f/2.8 ?

There are lots of variants of the Chinon 28mm f2.8 (assuming that is what yours is). Some may be better than others. I have one that is quite nice - sharp across the frame at f5.6. A little softer wide open.

Check out the picture of the pocket watch in the gallery! My Chinon 50mm captured that!

That's very nice and the watch looks interesting.

Another very good lens that can be picked up for buttons
is the Chinon 50mm f/1.9..... It gives me the impression
that it's an old design? Very nice bokeh

Some more from the f1.9 ...... reminds me of the Pentax FA77mm
but costs less than £20 Good build quality as well

Smugmug

Must go and dig out my copy

Edit: Just dug out my copy, really smooth focus.
The focus mark on the DOF scale is a very narrow
0 ..... one of the lens makers uses that as trade
mark.... does anyone know who it is?

The 28mm and 35mm I've got don't have it. The 55mm
f/1.4 lenses usually have a red diamond.

You can see the mark on this photo

I've seen it suggested that it is Tomioka. The 28mm f2.8 that I have doesn't have it.

I don't think so.... the O possibly indicates something
beginning with O..... I've seen it before possibly on a
Vivitar lens.

It's very sharp... this was just a test on my way to
beer shop

No PP and no sharpening jpeg straight off camera (K-5)
I didn't use RAW. The RS is as good as the centre the
LS is just slightly worse. 100ISO f/8 SR ON

And a quick bokeh test wide open at f/1.9...
certainly sharp.... No PP

No, I don't think so either - but I have seen it said several times. If it were a Tomioka trademark, you'd expect to see it on their own brand lenses - and it isn't.

Trying to work out who made what and for whom can be quite puzzling;
I have a Chinon 200mm f3.3 (not the f3.5) and a CPC Phase 2 200mm f3.3 which was 'commissioned?' by Pentax and made by ???. The point being that these two lenses are, except for minor cosmetic details, identical - even the elements are interchangeable!

I suspect that there are a number of other 200mm f3.3 lenses bearing the names of other well known companies which are also identical.

I think it's called badge engineering

Roger.

Aren't CPC owned by Pentax?

The Ricoh 200mm is made by Pentax... it's the same as the
M series.

There's a lot to be said for the humble 50mm lens, or 35mm on APS-C, as it can be used for almost anything and abused by almost any accessory that can be thrown at it.

Algi has also opened my eyes, as I've never thought of "sheep photography" as a genre in itself.
Best regards, John
