Checking sensor cleanliness

What is the best way to check my sensor for cleanliness, before taking my shots?

Should I take photos of a blank sheet of paper etc?
Do I focus on the paper, do I have aperture open or closed etc?

Cheers!
Getting there! Thanks to you guys

I find the best is to go outside on a blue sky day and stop down to f22. Take a picture of the sky.

The key is to stop right down.

Don;t know about aperture but a blank canvas, such as a wall, helps.

If the subject has any marks they may show up on the screen as dust, I know, I tried to remove the wallpaper pattern from MY sensor!
Cheers, HG

I was so worried I had to go and have a Large G'n'T!

It looked much better afterwards.

I always remove the lens select B mode and take a picture of something white (white computer screen) move the camera while taking picture to ensure that only dust on the sensor screen shows up
Good luck

I assume you're kidding? Surely removing the lens while the sensor is charged is a sure fire way to attract dust?

I use the smallest aperture, defocus the camera and aim at a white wall or ceiling, and make sure my hands are nice and unsteady on a long exposure . That way I know anything I see is on the sensor.
