Charger Accident

When trying to charge the battery for my K30 recently, I put battery in and the light came on and immediately went out. On further inspection I realised that the charger seems to have got water in after leaving it by the window. I left it to dry for a day and tried again with similar experience. I am going to leave it some more to see what happens.

The battery itself still operates the camera OK as it is still half charged.

My question for those more technically minded is, is it likely that I may have damaged the battery preventing it from recharging by trying to charge when there was water in the charger or should the battery be OK? I.E do i need to replace both batter and charger or just charger.

My wife had a similar incident whilst on holiday a couple of years ago, only it was a charger for a Fuji camera. The LED failed to work on hers, but it would happily recharge the battery every time!

So long as you don't get water inside the actual battery itself, you'll be okay. If you hear a loud banging noise coming from the battery, it's safe to assume that water's got into it!!

The battery should not have suffered any damage, but its impossible to tell really, until you've charged it with perhaps another charger and determined for yourself whether it's OK or not. I'd suggest that if it still powers the camera, it'll probably be OK.

If you have an airing cupboard or similarly warm place, put the charger in there for a week or so to dry it out, then try it again.

I purchased this charger, and it is one of the best purchases I have ever made, lovely piece of equipment.

Peter's idea of the airing cupboard works well, but its improved if you put it in an air tight box/bag with some raw rice. Rice is quite good at absorbing water, though silica gel is better if you have some.

Having done the Airing Cupboard route a couple of times even with a panas***** camera
that was dropped into a swiming pool... and everytime it worked after 5days...

Just to add, plugging the charger in before it has properly dried out is a fairly dangerous thing to do for obvious reasons.

But the good news is that it is far less delicate than a camera so you could put it in a fairly warm place such as on top of a radiator to dry it more quickly.

I never heard of these people, are they good?

Hahenl are German by origin, but are based in Ireland. Very reliable company, with lots of useful accessories -batteries, chargers, remotes etc.

I have a similar charger to Snappychappy, which I bought for when travelling as you can use it with a 9v connection too. Nevertheless I still use the Pentax one the most.

Thanks for the advice everyone, have charger in airing cuboard and will will leave it there for some time bofore trying again next week.

If that fails will get a new charger.

Indeed, i was a bit disturbed when i realised the charger was leaking water as i had just been handling it plugged in etc

Lost a mobile phone in October and thought it had been stolen.

My wife found it in the garden after Xmas - very wet with a lot of evidence of water having got inside and behind the screen. Left it on a radiator for a couple of days, and it seemed to have dried out a bit but there was still water behind the display.

Tried to switch it - but nothing until I put a spare battery in it, and then the damned thing actually started and came back to normal operation (even though still showing water behind the display)!

Gave it another few days on the radiator and now it is completely dried out and working normally! Bloody amazing and it p***ed me off that I bought another one of the same type in late Oct - but only up to the point that I know I have got one tough phone (it also has a "Gorilla Glass front!), and now a spare!
