When you select the OK button to do your auto focussing, your shutter button just has one role.... to operate the shutter. So the behaviour you describe seems normal to me.

Yeah same to me, i'v actually put the AF away from the shutter for that reason.
With quick-shift you have manual focus lenses unless you press the OK/AF button.

I thought "Catch in Focus" refers to the customisation of the setttings to actually automate the shutter firing when the subject comes into focus.
I was taking pictures at a horse showjumping event when I first got my K20D. As you can imagine when the horse starts to move, time is running out and the pressure is on. For the life of me, the camera started to freeze and the shutter just wouldnt fire for the first jump.
I still dont know why, but you would think something must have been in focus out there. I've played with the settings so much since that I cant replicate this, and dont know what was the cause.
Must have been default settings.

The problem is technique. If you prefocus on the jump, where you know the horse will be, just release the shutter a fraction of a second before the horse is there. There is a slight delay before the shutter releases, so you need to allow for this. You can use manual focus.
Catch in focus is where you use a manual focus lens but set the camera to AF. You can prefocus on a spot and when something crosses that point the shutter will release. For what you have in mind though that will be too late as the shutter lag will mean the horse is already in front of where you have focused.

I realise this is an old question of yours, but have you tried pressing the "OK" button while you press the shutter button? Does the camera still fire the shutter even if nothing is in focus?

How come if I have AF set on half press (K100D on M80-200)
the cif works ie: only releases shutter when focus light lit...
but when I set enable focus on the OK button, the shutter will release whether the focus light is on or not ?
