James - I had similar probs with CS3E - loaded on my laptop OK but absolutely refused to do anything on my desktop .
I changed my processor (unrelated to the CS3E issue) and a few other things got altered in the year - it then loaded as it should!
When CS3 was launched, there was a late change to the instal engine which caused a lot of trouble to a lot of people. No single thread came up with a magic bullet. So could be something processor or graphic card related. Or just being willful.

Steve you where right my hard drive was damaged and needed replacing in the end and now my CS3 has loaded up and is running well

Glad you're up and running
It's a bit b***** irritating when you shell out for a package such as CS3E and it won't play - and there is nothing you can do to make it play. I got mine at educational rates (one of the benefits of working for a University) and had other options, so wasn't a show stopper. I also changed my C drive - one of the things I'd done over the period in question - but it wasn't damaged (it is still working under a different guise), nor was it listed as a potential solution on the Adobe forum!

The reason is my lap top has gone down and I would like to re-invest with the right working programs for my studio
My office desk top Computer has a working CS3 with serial number but the disc will not load on my laptop (guess it was a one time upload)
