Canal SHots

Well, I got out of bed this morning and went to Ellesmere Port. I was certain I could get some shots for Malo's theme....wrong. The place is full of oil refineries, but nothing which I could see to adequately illustrate the theme.

Still. It gave me a little time down by the canal, here are some of the shots I got.

C&C please

Really really like the last shot, I like it a great deal.

I also like the second, and b/w was a good move there IMO.

Not so sure about one and three, but can't put my finger on why though.

Thanks Bob.

I'm not as sure about those two either, which is why I stuck them up for C&C. They are colourful, sharp, framed nicely ( IMO ), but missing something.

I suppose it could be down to the mysterious rule of thirds...

If three was taken with a wider angle I'd say it would work better (like the last one).

Number 4 is a great image!
The others lack a focal point for your eye to sit on, or be lead to.
1,3 and 4 are leaning to the right, 4 is very close but it was the first one I noticed due to the strong verticals and horizon.

I like the stillness of the [fourth] one, the perfect reflections. Not sure about the placement of the chimney though.

Looking again, you are spot on right. When I am consciously looking at it, I find my eye wanders around.

I'm afraid, for me, they are totally devoid of content and you've missed a zillion picyure opportunities, IMHO! I know that area very well, having stayed at the nearby Holiday Inn on more times than I care to remember on the way to some job or other.

Every time I have had breakfast overlooking the basin, I've promised myself I'd go back and take pictures but there has never been time before rushing off to work.

As architects are fond of saying, "God is in the detail".

You have exactly the right kit to make a good job of it but the first two just dont do anything for me, the fourth I do like, however.

They all tilt down at the right.

I'd really like to see what you could do at the Boat Museum.

Yep, I plan to go back when the museum is open and get closer to the boats. But this was 8am and everywhere was locked up.

As for the tilt...I must get me a tripod with a spirit level

Funnily enough, I was at the Holiday Inn that same night...didn't even know it existed until then.

As I was walking in over the bridge I made a comment to my friends about having to get back with my camera. Next time you are stopping there, if you have time to go walk about on an evening, maybe I could come and join you

Hi Father Ted,
I won't comment on your pictures because everything has been said.
One little tip, though. If you are not sure if a horizon is straight just use the straighten tool in PS or elements.
If it is straight, nothing will happen. If not, it is corrected automatic. You'll notice it, I promise.

Now, would you mind explaining why you couldn't find a suitable subject for the competition?

Oil refineries all over the place and no subject ?? Come on.......

Martin.
Best regards,

Martin.

PSP9 doesn't appear to have that function. I have to manually rotate the image and guess by how many degrees.

Sorry Sir..I'll try harder next time

They've obviously cleaned their act up. I was expecting lots of chimneys pumping out black smoke and they weren't. I couldn't get close enough to the pipe work etc due to big fences and intimidating warning signs..

If PSP8 has it, I'll presume 9 has it also ! Just scroll towards the beginning of page 39 of the link. Maybe you missed it.
Best regards,

Martin.
