can i use it

One of my friends was about to throw this lens away as he no longer has a camera.( Pentax-A Zoom 1:3.5~4.5. 28~80mm). My question is, can i use it on my Pentax Kx with an adapter. And is there an adapter on the market. I have a feeling this came of off a film camera. So i may be wasting my time. Your thoughts please.

Yes you can use it. Set the aperture ring on A and you have a fully functional lens with your K-x. It will still be manual focus of course!

Sorry John, being new was not quite sure which one to put the topic. Have done as you suggested, but the lens will just not engage or lock.

If it's a Pentax-A lens then it has to, unless there's something very wrong with it. Can you post an image of the back of the lens?

Just a quick thought, have you tried turning the lever to MF ( manual focus ) on the front of the camera

Yes Chris, have tried various, but to no avail.

Looking at it I can see no reason why it wouldn't fit. I presume other lenses that you have fit perfectly well?

If you set the lens to an aperture, let's say f/8 and operate that lever by the protruding guard does the lens stop down smoothly and without hesitation? I was just wondering if the lever was jammed.

Set it back to "A" after that and the lens should fit without any problems onto any Pentax body. There isn't some adapter already on your camera is there? If so, remove that before you fit this lens.

John, I've had a good look and measure between this lens and my kit lens. There is a slight difference on the black ring of this lens, it protrudes more than the kit one. So i dont think it can sit in snugly. Ken

I presume you're lining up the red dot on the mount flange with the red dot on the mount (not the red button on the aperture ring or the white blob)?

Have you tried holding the lens release button in whilst mounting?

I wonder if some previous owner has been messing with it, but if it doesn't fit properly then ditch it rather than trying to force it. Repair would not be cost effective for such a low price lens.

Once again, Thanks for everyones input. No John the lens has no signs of meddling, no dints or scratches. Very clean to be honest. Do you think its because it came of a film camera. shall do as suggested. Ken

No, film camera lenses are fine, the mount hasn't changed. A mystery that we'd need to look at in the flesh to make any further sense of it.
