Can I use a flash bracket for contrast control flash?

I resently bought a stroboframe flash bracket with the hopes of using it for Contrast Control flash.

I have a *ist D and a 300ftz flash unit (along with the cord & both hot shoe adapters).....

When I use the cameras pop-up flash and the 300ftz on the contrast control setting, I get lousy results...a fadded shadow behind the subject where the popup flash didn't fully compensate for the 300ftz.

Am I doing something dumb? or just not understanding how contrast control works?

Or do I need a flash unit with a bounce swivel head?

Would a Omni-bouncer help me?

Lotsa questions....

G'day.
I don't know about the *ist D.
But I use it all the time on a MZ-6.
Great results.
I know that people are having some problems with the *ist D flash exposures.
