Possible water damage causing a short circuit? If you took the camera below the recommended max depth of about 3 metres, you may have stressed the water-resistant seals. The series of lines you got on the screen hints at possible impact damage (perhaps you'd dropped it on a hard surface initially, causing damage to the seals). The press of any button causing the camera to take photos automatically (I presume you mean you cannot manually set any special functions, such as macro, etc?) hints at a short-circuit, possibly caused by conductive residue (sodium salts from the sea-water) on the main circuitry. I'd get a Pentax-authorised repairer to have a look at it.

Thanks Steven,thought this may be the problem as caught it getting back onto the catamaran.Will try and find my local Pentax repairer.

It is probably not worth repairing ... the costs will be quite high.

Don't know if anyone has any suggestions,but I have just returned from a lovely holiday,whilst on a snorkelling trip I developed a problem with my Pentax optio w30.It was fine at the begining of the trip but then took 2 pictures at random then I got a series of lines on my screen then just went dead.
I wondered if water had somehow got into the unit so left it a couple of days to dry outbut still nothing.
Upon returning home I fully charged the bettery again and then did get the cemera to switch on but then no matter what button I press the camera just takes picyures automatically and I can not now get out of this mode.
Has anyone got any suggestions or has this happened to anyone else.
I would really appreciate any help from anyone as to what may have caused this.
