camera not working/ Av flashing

For no reason I can see, my newly acquired K100D Super has ceased to work. On switching on, the LCD shows the remaining nymber of shots, a flashing Av and two dashes.
Playback works, the menu button gives a display but other controls are non-functional and it won't take pictures. The camera is not brand new and not in warranty, but is in very good condition and was working well.

Any suggestions, and what exactly does Av stand for?

Have you done a reset to factory settings?

P179 of the manual.

Av - means you have Aperture Priority selected, or is an indication of the Aperture vale selected but the -- indicates an error. Have you checked the lens is correctly mounted and the contacts clean?

Hi Jbrramsey welcome to the forum.

What lens do you have on the camera : Is it the kit lens :

It sounds like the lens is not communicating with the body. You need to go into the custom settings and change the (allow use of the aperture ring) too permitted. Or it could be dirty contacts on either the lens or body mount, give them both a good clean. cheers

Thanks for your prompt responses. Indeed changing the lense seems to sort the problem so I think you are very much on the right lines, though I can't see anything wrong with the lense I was using.

There is nothing wrong with the lens. You just have to change the custom setting to what I have said above and it will work fine.

As Clarky said, give the contacts a clean and also exercise the aperture ring several times to ensure any internal contacts are cleaned.

You probably had a lens fitted that had the 'A' setting on the aperture ring, but the aperture was set to something other than 'A'.

Thanks all. Clarky's suggestion rectified the problem as he so confidently predicted.
