GB,
Put in new batteries. The shutter won't fire without them and the advance won't work until the shutter fires.
Hope this helps - I just reviewed this on my P30.
And welcome to the best camera forum in the world.

Go to www.pentax-manuals.com (I think) .
This is Kim Coxon's wonderful site. You can download the P30 Manual.
It is a rather sophisticated little camera and worth getting to know.
The magic word is Pentax.

The file is fine. You are doing something wrong. Right-click on the link, and take "Save target as" (assuming you're using Windows).Hey Mac

I got the original Pentax flash which was purchased with the camera. It's a Vivitar Auto Thyristor 2800,,,,,,,,,no instructions with it though. However i rarely use a flash.

Gary,
I had that Vivitar model - my daughter uses it now. It's very good.
Dial in the ASA, set the Auto switch to green, set the lens to whatever f stop is indicated, set your P30 speed dial to 1/125th, and blast away.
If you can get your hands on a Pentax AF200SA, you can really take advantage of the P30's TTL flash capability. And it is totally coupled to the camera - nothing to set on the flash.
Enjoy!

I have just purchased a used Pentax P30 on ebay. Unfortunately the film advance lever only moves half as far as it should. Consequently i can't load a film and naturally can't really use the camera.
The batteries incidentally are flat (not certain if this has any influence on this paticular function) as it is a manual function.
I got loads of extras with it and am reluctant to send it back if it's something simple to resolve.
Many thanks
GB
