I have a compatible battery, and it's just fine.
But if you are getting a compatible battery, do check the specifications carefully and make sure you are getting like for like. Then you shouldn't have any problems.
Many compatibles are cheaper because they have lower capacities and outputs. They will still work, but just won't last as long.

I have read and heard a lot of issues with batteries purchased on e-bay, which are in fact duds, or have caused damage to the camera in question. Offertonhatter wrote:

As for batteries from E-bay, I am always wary, as they could be problematic.
So I try and go for known brands from reputable sources. So either OEM or brands such as Hahnel, Uniross etc.

Sure, it might be very rare, but it is something that makes you think. Hence why I always purchase something like a battery from a reliable source.

I have not had problems with compatibles for my Canon kit - indeed the Duracells (£12 instead of around £80/90) seem to hold charge for longer when not in use and last at least as long in use - probably more.
Same cannot be said of ones I bought for my K5 - my Pentax battery ran down while out and about and the compatible one I placed in the camera (fully charged night before) was showing very low after less than 8 or 10 shots !!!!!!
I bought three so hopefully that one is a one off

I have two Pentax chargers, four Pentax batteries, one Innov8 battery.
All chargers and batteries numbered so that any fault is traceable and batteries rotated.
The innov8 battery is noticeably less efficient than the Pentax ones, but if that was all you were using you wouldn't notice any difference.

well, if you don't want to spend £50 on Pentax one, buy from Amazon, it's £31 there But still about 6x more than a no-name one.

I've a couple of Innov8 batteries for the K-5 - yes, they don't last quite as long as the Pentax one, but the two of them cost less than half that of one Pentax item! And, otherwise, no problems so far.

I have used batteries from Ebay for some years for my cameras, normally buy from 1 supplier, their high capacity ones last longer than the Pentax /branded ones, never had any problems.

Which supplier please Dave?
My spare is an Innov8. I've had it 18 months or so and it now won't hold much of a charge at all so I need something else.

Can you tell us who that supplier is?

I'm looking at a second charger for my K5 batteries. The original Pentax charger has three terminals marked, "- T +". The aftermarket versions seem to omit the "T" but say they will operate fine without. Can anybody tell me what the "T" terminal is for?

Thermistor (or temperature, I guess). I'm looking at a second charger for my K5 batteries. The original Pentax charger has three terminals marked, "- T +". The aftermarket versions seem to omit the "T" but say they will operate fine without. Can anybody tell me what the "T" terminal is for?
It allows monitoring of the temperature of the battery during charging.

Yup, probably is - OTOH, I lost or mislaid the original Pentax unit and bought something like bforbes described. Appears to work OK with both the original & Innov8 batteries with no obvious signs of overheating. It stops the battery going... Bang!....Boom!.... bursting into
