Buying a domain name

What's the point of having a website if it's not for self promotion or for selling your wares? If you're selling goods and services from your site you have to have your Whois available as part of the ICANN rules I believe...

I believe that is correct. As my little bit of cyberspace isn't used commercially, there is a means of enabling people to contact me should they wish to but any transactions are done in the real world. Whilst there are many obvious advantages to having a presence on the web, there are quite a few chalked up for not putting everything out there...

I have had a 'personal', bloggy type website since 2009 (www.overland-rovers.com with my details readily available on whois. I have no contact details on the website and have only received a couple of 'spam' emails in all that time.

Personally I don't think it's worth paying for but that's just my opinion.

Well I guess from a security point of view, not everyone wants their home address easily accessible to everyone, especially advertising the fact that your home contains lots of expensive camera and computer gear.
