Built in shake reduction. Does this really works?

It should be the same as the canon IS lenses, where there are the two settings, one for panning and the other to correct everything.

I also think SR works very, very well, also up to 200-300mm, but then the monopod becomes necessary.

So out of the two systems employed by pentax and nikon to stabalize the camera does one work better than the other. A freind of mine has nikon kit but i think he pays more for his lenses with vr than the pentax version of the same lens.

Your understanding is correct. At least, that's my understanding if I've understood the manual correctly.
OS option 2 on the 150-500mm allows for vertical stabilisation only.

built in sr is very good, and has its advantages of being used on all lenses, in lenses you can see it working and alot more so on bigger lenses (400mm up) and each lens can be differently tuned to get bettter results at certain focal lenghts, my husband finds his sigma os lenses better than his nikon vr lenses.

In many cases too fast a shutter speed completely ruins shots of moving objects.

I've taken shots of race cars where they look like they've been parked n the circuit, and planes/helicopters where the propeller is stopped. Getting the shot right, involves leaving enough motion blur, in wheels, propellers etc. to give the impression of speed.

Whilst not ideal, I've found Pentax's SR generally improves my (handheld) panning shots, as it copes reasonably well keeping long smooth movements, whilst minimizing of axis shakes.

Yep although you could use it on a monopod though.
The problem is that if the movement is below the threshold of the SR system there might be the possibility that a feedback loop will be created inside the SR system so it might actually move the sensor while the camera is completely still.

I don't understand a word of that

Why would the camera move the sensor if it doesn't detect any movement? Surely the idea is for the camera to move the sensor when there is movement detected?

All manufacturers recommend turning SR off if a tripod is used. The system searches for movement and if there is none it can cause problems.

Using the 2 second self timer alos switches off SR, locks up the mirror and is ideal for macro work on a tripod.

The only kind of problems that matter in this context - less sharp images.

All the manufacturers can't be wrong and it doesn't hurt us to believe them.

I don't do blind belief. It's unhealthy

I'm actually interested in the mechanics of this and want to learn about it, rather than just blindly believe something.

Hopefully someone knows the answer. Stefan mentions a feedback loop. Now there's an obvious feedback loop in normal workings of the SR. i.e
1] camera detects movement and moves the sensor to compensate,
2] camera detects less movement and moves the sensor less to compensate
3] Image is stabilised so camera stop moving sensor to compensate.
4] job done. you can now take a picture.


now.... in the situation where there is no movement one would expect the feedback loop to be finished. i.e

1] camera detects no movement so sensor isn't moved
2] job done. you can now take a picture.


So there must be some condition that moves the sensor when no movement is detected.

The world is full of stupid things, but I seriously doubt a camera manufacturer would code something that stupid.

So the question is ..... what?
