Built in flash vs extra flash

The built in flash is not very powerful and would give you very flat look images. An external flash would be preferable, especially if you can get it off-camera. You would need to check the trigger voltage as some older flashes had very high ones which may damage your cameras electronics. All old Pentax flashes will be ok. K.

You can make a simple diffuser which will dramatically improve images taken with the built-in flash.
Take an old translucent film canister and cut a slot in its side so that it fits over your built-in flash.
You'll be very surprised at what it can achieve.
I'll try and post some images of mine and with/without comparisons tomorrow (more likely to be Saturday).
If you haven't got an old film canister I'm sure somebody here can send you one, just ask.

I haven't used films for ages but made a simple diffuser by cutting the handle off a 4 pint plastic milk carton and cutting a slit along its length. Slide it over the internal flash and there you go. Easy to make and it really helps cut down the harsh shadows...

Also if i buy a second hand flash gun is it safe to put on my main camera i think i hear it not?
