Here are three I took using Frogfish's tips about settings. I think I should have turned down the ISO a bit in the sun, but adjusted it after. The avocet doesn't have quite enough depth of field, I think, but I'm really pleased with the second gull.
The important thing is not to worry about the species but to keep practicing. It helps if you build a little area in the garden and work out beforehand the most photogenic locations (and bait them with food), this Blue Tit is sitting on a tree just in front of my bedroom (the nest box is on the wall just to the side of the window)
...or you can really cheat
and have someone catch the bird for you first. I've owned the DA*300 since it was released, still in love.
