Bi-colour filter - why?

As a result of an ebay accident (seller sent the wrong filter, but said they'll send the one I ordered and to keep the first one as it was their fault - excellent customer service!) I've ended up with a bi-colour red/blue filter. It has 180 degrees of the glass disk red and the rest blue.

I'm just wondering where/why this would be used?

It can be used to deepen the blue of the sky while warming up the bottom part of the image. Beside that, you can have fun experimenting with different effects in different lighting situations.

Not very useful on digital since you can do all that in PP but for your film cameras it would be fun.

... but having the filter means that you don't have to do it in PP

yes but you've more control in PP, the filter doesn't degrade the image and it can take less time than finding the filter in your bag and screw it on.

Also the filter is 50/50 I believe so it's hard to make a good sound composition with that because you most of the time place the horizon on a 1/3th line.

I'll have a play and see what results I get. So far I've managed to make the kitchen sink look very odd by turning the right hand half red and the left half blue!

Photography is fun. The frustrating part is admiring the wonderful shots from others and not being able to produce something similar.

I think this is intended for B+W film, red darkens the blue sky and the blue will lift the foreground assuming you have a horizon in the middle. Pretty hopeless I suspect.

If photography is fun you aren't doing it right.
