Some information about this:

http://www.snopes.com/fraud/telephone/pds.asp

Usually anything of the form:

"Circulate this to all your friends... [authoritative source] has confirmed this as true.... [really bad thing will happen] "

... is itself a hoax.

Unusually, this one seems to have had at least some basis in fact, albeit several years ago.

Snopes is a great site to check these things before forwarding on the warnings.

According to hoax-slyer this scam was closed down in 2005 and hasn't been resurrected.

Here is Snopes view on it too.

Worth bearing it in mind though .

Edit; Chris beat me too it

I think the real xmas postal scam is how deliveries suddenly take twice as long and items seem more prone to going walkabout. Not as if they haven't had the entire history of the postal service to get used to dealing with the extra traffic...

I just hope the light-fingered individual who presumably made off with one of my parcels last year was suitably annoyed when they found it to contain a battered old ERC rather than anything resalable!

Might be dearer by now if other replies are correct and this is an old scam.

Try after 6pm and see if you get the same rate

Sorry Alan, but this has never worked in the UK. No call has ever been this expensive and premium calls have explicit warnings before the bills can be racked up.

HOWEVER if you would like a FREE Pentax K-5 where you only have to pay postage then please send me a cheque for £50....
