Best raw conversion software?

Various comments I've read in a number of recent posts suggest to me that not all raw conversion software is created equal (nor for that matter image editing software).

I'd be interested to know if any particular software package is 'the best'?

I appreciate that some software packages are more popular than others, but that might be price not quality?

No there is a difference between all of them and they do things differently so therefore there is no such thing as the best.

The most popular ones here are:
silkypix
adobe lightroom / photoshop
capture one

I myself use Lightroom since it's the most complete package and least space consuming.
I did how ever install a trial of the new capture one to see how that is. I've tried Silkypix but the creators think differently then I do so the interface isn't for me.

Same problem here! I battle with Pentax Laboratory. It slows down my computer (which is very much up to today's standards). Can anybody advise me on the best RAW conversion software without spending an arm and a leg?

A friend has recommended Capture NX by that yellow company but that would be like treason. I am open for any advice...

Capture One 5 is the cheapest of the three I named but don't know how limited it is against the Pro version I'm trying now.

Simply try them all out I say, they all have a 30 day trial version

I've found copies of LR2 for £14 on a web site. Do not need registering but are fully functional. At first I thought 'Dodgy' but now not sure. It's very open for all to see, so maybe they have bought up a bulk licence !? At this price I think I'll give it a go

For that money Stu I wouldn't trust it, £14 is silly for something that normally cost £200

My vote would be for Silkypix. Also available on a 30 day trial.

It's fairly easy to try before you buy from among the various standard products, which I'd suggest doing. The best is what works best for you.

I tried Lightroom but eventually settled on ACDSee as it roughly the same thing, and a couple of things more, for less than half the price. I found it easy to get on with the way ACDSee works. The next user might feel the opposite. For quite a few things Google's Picasa - which is free - strikes me as fine and it gets updates fairly regularly. In the same way, there is Gimp - again free. This does more or less the same thing as Photoshop. It is not as good, at least imho, but then it doesn't cost hundreds of pounds. You makes your choice ...

Try RawTherapee, it's free. A £14 copy of Lightroom will be an illegal copy.
