do you mean the vertical controls don't work if there are no batteries in it?
because I never have batteries in my *istd and the vertical controls work fine - maybe i misunderstood?

If there are no batteries in the grip on my *istD the vertical controls don't function.
Never tried it with no batteries in the camera and only the grip.
Do they function on yours in this configuration?

My grip on the *ist-D works perfectly with one battery set in either the body or the grip. There are problems when running two sets of batteries... but that's another story
However, you must turn the power on the grip for the grip controls to work
(i.e. turn on camera, then turn on grip - both controls then work).
HTH!

I am previously owned a DBG1 and the *istD where this was not the case.
Makes charging the second battery in the grip easier, since you don't lose the vertical controls.
