Battery depleted every day!

in addition to the above advice, it sounds like you are using your camera in the cold....
your breath condensing on the lens could be a factor in image quality...

you should keep two or three sets of batteries on you when shooting in the cold... one in the camera and spares on an inside pocket where your body heat will keep them warm... cold batteries die fast.

lastly seal your camera inside a ziplock baggie before bringing it in from the cold to prevent condensation from damaging it, let warm up before taking it out of the baggie.

I've found my batteries often recover significantly if left with the camera turned off for a few minutes. If you find you've used up your (warm) spare set the 1st ones might have recovered enough to give you a few more shots (especially if they've been allowed to warm).

Thanks again, I have certainly got plenty to think about.

I put in two lithium batteries and the difference is amazing. Whilst I am still filming near my home in the Alps, and it is snowing thickly at the moment, I am keeping my camera and spare batteries well wrapped up when I am not using them.

I was delighted to get two very nice comments on my first photo in the gallery, but I have to admit that I didn't deserve any praise for the colour or composition as I am stil at the stage of just pointing and clicking. I know there is some way of getting a good shot of the far-off high peaks of the Massif de Mont Blanc, which I see every day on my way to the shops, but I haven't worked out what it is.
I have put another, less chilly, photo on the gallery of the ski slopes about 3 kms from my studio.
I have lived in eight different parts of France, but at the age of 70 I feel I have finally found my ideal location. I live in Haute Savoie, about 25 kms South of Lake Leman (Lake Geneva) and about an hour from Chamonix/Mont Blanc. I can be in Switzerland in an hour and Italy in two hours. The studio is surprisingly warm - I don't even need to use my radiator, and the view from the front balcony is stunning. I am going to keep a photo record of the changes in the colours of the forest over a year.

I have to say I think the idea of recording the same view over a period of months could produce some amazing shots - go for it.

There aren't many of us who can look at that scenery on a daily basis.

I am very encouraged by your comments and I will continue to post one photo a day - I really would welcome advice on how to improve.
