.....so, I was shooting a stack, shot 3 of 15, when I noticed the battery was onto the orange warning level so, having to go out with my wife in twenty minutes for a couple of hours, I put the battery on charge,The light on the charger came on, as usual.
Got back home had supper etc, etc thought I'd carry on with the stack. The charger light was off.
Shutter inoperative, Battery Depleted message.
Tried several times.
Changed lens.
Same.
Put battery back on charger, LIGHT CAME ON!
Which means the battery was ready to accept a charge despite having been on charge for over 5 hours.
I had had no problems with the battery since I've had the camera.
Shutter count is 105066, from new, with this battery........
Roger.
Sorry, John, missed your post! Please see the above.

I think it's done pretty well - like Chris says, treat your trusty K5 to a new battery

Anyone have any thoughts on an alternative to the Pentax original @ £ 70-odd, say in the £20 area ........?
Cheers,
Roger.

I think the DSTE (available on Amazon) are supposed to be good for a 3rd party cell. Currently they are doing a pair of them for £15. But this isn't from my experience, I remember them being recommended as a cheap alternative a while ago.

That happens with all my batteries and all my chargers. I think the charger has to try charging the battery before it can work out whether it needs to stop. If the light goes out fairly quickly, the battery is fully charged and all is well.
However, it does seem like you need to treat your K5 to a new battery. SRS has an Ansmann clone for £19.99, so just within your budget. I've not used that brand so can't say whether it's any good - but would SRS sell it if it isn't?

I've got a couple of DSTE batteries. Bought a USB charger, with 2 batteries, as a package from a seller on Amazon 2 or 3 years ago. Less than 20 quid all-in at the time.
In use, I see no difference between them and the OEM battery that came with my K-3.

I have a number of different ones. They are all good. The only difference is the number of Ma hours stated on the labels. I keep them in a battery wallet and rotate them. You have only accused the battery thus far. The chargers can play up too due to thin films of muck on the charging blades and also on the battery terminals. Give both of them some stick with a simple pencil eraser to make sure your connection is good.
