i have uniross rechargeable batteries 2700mah for my camera which seemed to work fine but after a couple of months they seem to be losing power very quickly or not charging properly in the first place. charge them up put them in and they either say empty or run out after a few shots. i bought some normal disposable batteries to try and they were fine so i dont think its the camera. anyone any ideas?

I tried Uniross 2700's in my K200 and had a similar problem, but the same batteries in my K110 work fine!

I've started using lower rated (2300) batteries which seem to retain there charge longer. I also use a battery grip which means I have 8 batteries in two sets in use at the same time, maybe that's why I don't have any problems now.
Cheers, HG

K110+DA40, K200+DA35, K3 and a bag of lenses, bodies and other bits.

Mustn't forget the Zenits, or folders, or...

PPG entries.

Could be faulty batteries or a faulty charger.

Some rechargeable batteries can lose their charge in as little as 2 weeks if not used.

For that reason, I switched to Sanyo Eneloop batteries. They retain up to 80% of their charge after 12 months.

A standard NiMH battery normally looses about 10% charge after the first day, then 0.5 - 1% per day at room temperature thereafter.

There should be plenty of charge left after two weeks unless the battery is faulty or was not fully charged in the first place.

You can also use lithium AA. Look out for Energizer Lithium on special offer at Tescos, Jessops, 7dayshop, etc. These are more reliable and a lot lighter than NiMH rechargeable batteries.

They're fine. Be aware that they usually have a max capacity of around 2000maH. I find that is plenty.

There are chargers and there are chargers. Most use a timer to decide when the battery is charged (Energizer, Uniross etc chargers). What you ideally need is a charger that is intelligent. When I bought the BL700, it was like the secret of the universe had unfolded before my eyes, and suddenly batteries that were lasting half a day int he K100D were now lasting for several days (your mileage may vary). Also consider the batteries. Uniross hold their charge for the longest, but generally fail much quicker than other brands. I have got through three sets of Uniross 2500mAh to one set of Duracell 2100mAh (and still counting). Have a look at the charger I mentioned here

Again, your mileage may vary.

My charger preference is the Ansmann Energy 8.

I'm using energizer Lithium in my K200D, they go on for ages! I've heard about these Eneloop ones but can't seem to find them anywhere? - are they easy to source or am i just as blind as a bat?

For my flash I use these Varta Professional Have bought them with a digital charger that can also be pluged in into the car sigarete lighter, so if in emergencies I can give them some juice

I don't have enloops so I can't compare them but I've a set of 2 and if one set is depleted, they get recharged and go in the bag for a month or 2 before they see some use again and I can't really tell the difference if they are freshly charged or not. The Vartas are also 2700mAh compared to Enloop 2000mAh so there really is some difference even if they lose some more charge

Although I am new to DSLRs, I have some experience with rechargeables from another hobby, RC flying.

Generally the modelling fraternity as a little sceptical about 2700mAh NiMHs. They seem to loose capacity after relatively few cycles. I had a set in my transmitter for a while, then replaced them with 2000mAh cells and got a longer usable time. In model flying, Sanyo cells are considered th be the cells to have.

Just a quick to those who have Li-ion or Lipo cells - be nice to them, or else this happens
