Background - does it work?

I have two versions below, and wonder if the background is too busy for the subject in either or both?

Comments appreciated.

I'd say the first is ok but 2nd blends in to the background a bit, still nice all the same

Why not used a bigger aperture?
The second photo is the best though.

Gareth said what I was going to say so I needn't bother.

Love the old cracked wood, though. One of the reasons I enjoy photographing the inside workings of watermills.

I prefer the colour one, but I find the background quite distracting in both of them

Thanks all,

Perhaps a re-shoot one day (400 k's away) with a more suitable DoF.
