Back button af

How do i set up back button af. Cant seem to find it in menu settings.

I can't see any point in this On the K-5 the camera still focuses on the release button as well. It would have been handy if it disabled that.

Or could it be because I have AF set to perform when using a remote?

Setting the AF button to Cancel AF on the release button for as long as it's held in should allow MF ONLY with Quickshift lenses.

EDIT: Just found it. There's a menu item to turn off focus on the half press.

I was wondering about that too. will switch that off.

Will do, will try and get out, in a bit, after my dinner settles.

Set this up on my K5. Takes a couple of weeks to get accustomed. Was then pretty much the first customisation I did when purchasing both the K3 and the K5iis.

Only way to go for me.

Some interesting points there algi

This was something completely new to me that Pentax offered, and I was advised on this forum as well to try it ... Never looked back!

Now, focusing with every half press of the shutter just seems a waste. Certainly it drains power unnecessarily when shooting multiple frames of static subjects if re-focussing keeps occurring. Separating the focus, metering and capture actions makes a lot of sense (so long as you're aware of your control over each) ....afaik the meter will still re-fresh with every half and whole press on the shutter, even when af is de-activated from that button.

I still sometimes have to remember to stop pressing the back AF button when focusing is not needed. It's practicality in continuous af situations is really good!

Don't forget you have to half press the shutter button to activate SR plus allow the time for it to steady.

Oh dear, it's all staring to sound a bit complicated now You're not meaning before every shot I presume, Algi ... ? It would stabilise on the first half press for metering wouldn't it, if not even right on camera start-up ... ?

Ok i managed to get out for 20 mins with the camera, set for back button af. What ive noticed is that it will take a bit of getting used to.
After reading the other thread on this a common theme seemed to be its usefulness when in afc, as a fairly constant user of afs, this was awkward for me, though in fairness that was down to me forgetting that i could take my finger off the back button and still take the shot.
Overall i think this could work well once i have gotten used to it.
I shall persevere and see what happens in different situations and any learning points other than if set on afc don't forget to release the back button after focusing if wanting to recompose
