It will stabilize on 1st press which you have to do to use the rear AF button anyway. If it goes off the AF button won't wake the camera We are becoming a nation of button pushers

not sure about that Algernon, use this method all the time. just tried a few things ,i can use the rear af button without half press, the camera stabilises without half press ,in fact the camera indicates stable pressing no buttons at all. if i move the camera the hand indicator goes out but the minute i stop the movement it comes on after about 2 sec. showing stable, the half press starts the metering it also needs to be on for af if you want to use catch in focus.

Sorry.. It does do dat doe.... don't it doe

It wasn't doing it yesterday. I possibly changed another setting.

It switches off too soon. Anyone know of a setting to extend the stay on time.

For CIF I actually disconnected a wire on a wired remote so that I couldn't fire the trigger, but could switch the camera on (half-press equivalent) and hold it there.

The K7 has a custom setting to control meter operating time I think ... From memory it can be 3, 10 or 30 seconds (need to check). Presumably if within the set time period then repeated shutter button presses would not reactivate the meter circuit ....?

Your right Nigel Page 91 of the K-5 Manual...... Meter Operating Time
I've set it now to 30 secs. The focus beep now stays on with a MF lens for 30 secs. It has to be turned on via the AF button. Might be better turning the half press back on with a MF lens.

Amazing what you find out when you RTFM Did you know that you can actually change the lens No need to buy a new camera with each new lens What next!!

Yes, and did you know that there's a button for lens changing as well I find though that I have to improvise somewhat and keep holding it in while simultaneously turning the lens with the other hand! Not sure if others have discovered this, but its a good little tip...I found it gets more natural after a couple of weeks of regular lens changing

Someone has been going around with the silly stick again

I found BBF on the the K-7 I previously had to be excellent, never looked back.
Not so useful on the K-50 though.

Does your K-7 have AutoFocus printed on the button or AF, Nigel?

I'm all for abbreviations on camera bodies ... It's just funny sometimes when they're used in writing don't you think ...I was confused originally by BIF ...(that's 'birds in focus ' right ? :wink ... So now we have to ask should BIFs be shot with BBF or SBF ....

Should BIF be shot with HSM/SDM/MF lenses.wether you use BBF/SBF is the choice of the user. There that should be as clear as MUD.
