Auschwitz & Birkenau

I've just returned from a few days in Poland, in which time I visited Auschwitz & Birkenau.

I took a few photos on the tour just to try and capture the oppressive nature of the surroundings. Taken with my wifes Panasonic FZ-8 (Did not travel with the k20d)

The first depicts the electrified fence & one of the many watchtowers at Auschwitz.

The second was taken at Birkenau, this place really hit home with the mammoth scale of the atrocities committed. Each pair of chimneys shown in the following pic represents a single building which housed hundreds of inmates & they continued as far as the eye could see.

I think you managed to convey some of the atmosphere of the place with these images,

2 great shots that really show the bleakness of the place. I can almost feel the desperation of the poor souls that perished there. superb work.

A living testament of what the human race is capable of - very moving images and reminders of what went on there

#2 is very poignant and well-framed.

Thanks for the kind comments. I tried to keep the colours in #2 muted to convey the desolation, but keep the bricks saturated to show the multitude of chimneys.

Very haunting shots. We must never forget! Such an atrocity should never happen again!
