Aurora tonight,even down south

There is very high aurora activity tonight, should be visible even in southern England.

I can't see them here either, even though it si a clear night - too built up and too much light pollution, no car to get out anywhere either tonight.
My son up in Friesland hopped on his motorbike to get some dark (not hard to do in Friesland) and says they are spectacular. Where he is is about level with Nottingham.

According to spaceweather.com the figure for Bz is 18.2nT south...which means that the Earth's protective magnetic field has aligned itself with the sun's magnetic discharges allowing for conditions giving rise to this evening's Aurora.

I've been loosely following this figure for several years and this is one of the highest readings I have ever seen, hopefully this figure will reduce soon and our magnetic field turn back to 'north' polarity again as we are a bit vulnerable to extreme solar activity at the moment. Does make for 'once in a lifetime' scale auroras though for those of you with clear skies here in Western Europe.

An aurora AND a eclipse all the the space of 72 hours .... it can't get better than that !

My son just apped me a couple of photos his girlfriend took. Red aurora, very spectacular.
Dead jealous.

I'm not sure about this but I did notice a pink tinge to the sky a while back....so it may have been... or maybe not. However I keep having a look outside just in case

Had a quick foray up to Ditchling Beacon (South Downs) at about 9:45pm. Stars were visible but also some misty cloud. Sadly didn't see anything in the way of the lights - but thanks for the tip-off Gwyn!
